Makong holds a MSc in International Trade Policy and Trade Law, LLM in Intellectual Property and Technology Law and LLM in Computer and Communications Law respectively from Lund University, University of Liverpool and Queen Mary University of London. He also holds a post graduate certificate in Trade Finance from Middlesex University. He is currently an employee of ESAMI based at its trade policy training centre in Africa (TRAPCA). He is charged with lecturing, research and teaching in several responsibilities ranging from policy analysis, business law, transport law, trade law to climate change and trade and environment.

Previously he was a chairman of WTO Committees on Trade Related Investment Measures and Import Licensing, Coordinator and Chief negotiator of G77 and China Geneva Chapter, expert level Coordinator and Chief Negotiator of the African Group on WTO issues, and focal negotiator of the Geneva based ACP group on trade and environment, and for the LDCs on non-agricultural market access. Furthermore, he was expert negotiator of LDCs Group’s negotiations on TRIPS flexibilities and LDCs services waiver as well as Africa Groups chief negotiator on WTO’s trade facilitation Agreement.

He brings a wealth of experience on matters pertaining to the African continent and regions where among others he provides research and advisory support to the individual countries, regional and continental blocks. He contributed directly in the drafting and legal scrubbing of the AfCFTA. Makong is currently on the roster of arbitrators on SADC-EU economic partnership agreement and SACU – MERCOSUR trade agreement.
