Anton is an independent economist, long associated with the African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town. His research is focused on the green economy and the interactions between ecological degradation and human well-being.
Anton is the founder and director of Econologic which has conducted research and advisory work for World Bank, The European Union, DfID, WWF, local and international companies, NGOs, and local governments. In addition, he continues to run Credible Carbon, Africa’s first carbon registry linking global decarbonisation efforts to poverty alleviating projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Through the African Centre for Cities Anton has established and convened the City of Cape Town’s Climate Change Think Tank, an inter-disciplinary partnership between civil society, business and government and was part of a three-year project that launched Cape Town’s green economy in 2015. He led the New Climate Economy’s work in Africa and established the Tanzanian Urbanisation Laboratory (TULab) and the Ghana Urbanisation Think Tank (GUTT). Anton was a Lead Author of the IPCC’s Special Report on 1.5C of Warming in 2018 and a Contributing Author of the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report in 2022. His postgraduate qualifications were obtained from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.
